Another claim to fame for the CB&Q was having the tallest steam era (1900-1960)
freight car.
In a recent discussion on the Steam Era Freight Car list, it was agreed that
after the 60 class XA-14D auto cars had their roofs raised in 1942 to permit
the transport of B-26 wing sections, the height above the rail was 17' 3-1/16",
higher than the Santa Fe and UP cars originally proposed for the title by list
members.
These cars (and the "bomber boxes" on flat cars) were covered in Burlington
Bulletin
#15.
It is interesting that the additional height of the altered CB&Q cars wasn't
recorded in the ORER's although the roofs weren't lowered until 1946. Perhaps,
as they were in that specific service and would not otherwise be available,
there was no point to putting through an amendment to the listing ("The war
will be over by Christmas"), and once the B-26 service was completed and the
cars returned to general service, the lack of amendment was forgotten.
