Keep in mind that during winter, while not needed for produce, reefers were
used for many other products.
Beer moved in reefers, with heaters in winter. Canned goods, etc went into
reefers before the advent of the RBL class of insulated box cars. Somewhere I
have a picture of the Mt Morris main in front of the depot at Oregon,IL full of
reefers for the Carnation Milk plant.Nice back haul move.
My first hand experience is that potatoes and onions moved in winter,in
large volumes, with heaters in the cars. I even have documents that prove
Armour
Dial shipped cases of dial soap in an Armour reefer.
Seems the possibilities are almost limitless.
