Rich -
I don't recall any Q steam with ATC; they did have Automatic Cab
Signals, though. A lot of fans get the systems confused. Cab signal
territory was in effect from the west end of Union Ave interlocking
to the Stock Chute signal at Savanna, only. Don't recall any other
area on the Q in later years that had ACS. I was thinking 1950-1951
was the date of installation. Some engines had both ACS and Mars
lights; others, had one or the other.
Some R-5 Praires, and later 9400 series cow/calf switch engines were
equipped with Automatic Train Stop to operate on the C&NW from
Sterling to Lyndon, on the route to Denrock. I believe Archie Hayden
(on this group) worked that job and might shed some light on the
operation of that system (I recall the automatic brake valve
that "locked" with a key).
