Those of you living in Southern California have the opportunity to visit
Chris Crissie's HO scale Burlington Route layout.

This is one of seven layouts (all described below) that will be on a
free layout tour sponsored by one of my Yahoo groups, Model Railroads of
Southern California
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Model_Railroads_Of_Southern_California/
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Model_Railroads_Of_Southern_California/>
).

This tour will take place on Saturday, May 17, in Orange County. It
will be the eleventh free tour sponsored by the group. Maps and
directions are available on the Model Railroads of Southern California
group website in the Files Section (and please don't ask me to send
these materials to you.) Here is the schedule.

LAYOUT DESCRIPTIONS-

California Southern Model Railroad Club- The New California Southern
layout is a "mushroom" design, with the upper level reverse of the lower
level. This was determined by the membership as the way to make the
best use of the 24' by 73' area that was available. Once completed, it
will give a 500' run (one way) of linear travel. The layout is based on
the Southern California area, albeit with some "modeler's license"
thrown in. The club strives to keep the railroad non-era specific, by
changing structures and vehicles to represent different eras as desired.
The minimum radius on the mainline is 40" in the visible areas, and can
be 36" in the hidden areas. The minimum radius on industrial track is
20". The staging yard has tracks that average about 23 feet in length.
This allows for a train of about 30 to 40 cars, depending on the length
of the cars. Passing sidings are expected to be about 25 to 30 feet
long. In 2007 the club switched-over to a Digitrax DCC control system.

Curtis Buck - The basis of this layout was the famous cable-suspended
garage layout of the late Don Oldendorf of Placentia. Don's layout was
moved to Fullerton and placed in Curtis' long, deep garage. The
original scenery has been replaced with an early 1900s Western theme
with equipment and structures to match. The revised layout features a
generous lap-type mainline. Most motive power is steam and trains are a
mix of freight and passenger.

Chris Crissie- The time period for this layout is May 1959. Diesels
abound with many F and E units plus early hood units to be seen. The
layout fills a two-car garage. The track plan features staging yards
and two large ovals with the inner loop connected to branch lines and an
interchange. Burlington's Denver Zephyr and Train 29 (Fast Mail) are
featured as well as a large U.S. Army train. Passenger cars have
interior details and passengers for a very complete look. The layout is
power by conventional DC.

Jim Lancaster- The Los Angeles and San Diego Railroad is a large size HO
scale model railroad housed in its own 40' x 15' building at the back of
Jim's home. The building was constructed in 1962 by the original home
owner, former NMRA president Leighton Keeling. The layout occupies about
65% of the room. The setting is Southern California, with several
prototypical scenes of citrus packing houses and other citrus-related
structures. The model railroad is evolving to generally represent a line
between Highgrove (north of Riverside) and Orange County. Unlike the
prototype, which is a Santa Fe-only line from Riverside to Orange
County, the model railroad features joint trackage with two other
railroads, the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, over most of its
length. Emphasis is on the Southern Pacific through a subsidiary, the
Los Angeles and San Diego Railroad. This allows Jim to logically operate
the SP, Santa Fe and UP equipment he has collected over the years and to
model Southern California citrus packing houses featured on Jim's
packing house website.

Orange County Module Railroaders- This will be a 45' x 12'
module set-up. The original group was started by local Southern
California model railroad manufacturers in the early 1970s, as a way to
display their products at hobby shows. Organized as the Southern
California Module Builders, the club met at the Campbell Scale Models
factory. They displayed their first operating modular layout in 1973.
At various times in the club's history it was known by several different
names, including The Orange County HO Modular Group and Module
Railroaders - Orange County Division. In 1997, the name became Orange
County Module Railroaders.

Each member works from the set of club standards that specify module
construction. The standards assure interoperability amongst the modules,
and permit the modules to be assembled in a variety of ways so that our
display can be adjusted to the size and shape of the available space.
Beyond the club-specified main lines, the individual members decide the
era and theme of their modules. Individuality and creativity can be
exciting when designing a switching yard, service area, industrial
complex, agricultural area, or snaking the mainlines though a remote
mountain pass.

Pioneer & Western Model Railroad Club - This is the club's off-site
swap meet. There is only a club member's layout (Curtis Buck) at
this site.

Bill Scholz- Bill's 18' x 20' layout has its own upstairs room in his
house. This 1960s era railroad concentrates on the Santa Fe, especially
its passenger operations in the last years before Amtrak. Bill is
accumulating all the name Santa Fe passenger trains from this era. The
200' mainline allows continuous running through free lance Southern
California scenes.

Todd & Linda Brody- This garden scale, front yard layout is quite
innovative and incorporates features not seen on other garden railroad
displays. The landscape covers over 1,200 square feet with over 550
feet of track and six bridges, including a 14-foot long trestle. The
layout is built around two ancient volcanic areas that were thought to
be inactive; however; recent eruptions have been noted at two of the
craters in one area. The volcanoes spew "lava" into upper, then
lower, lakes through two waterfalls. All vegetation in the miniature
garden is real and to scale. The entire layout is detailed with
structures, over 300 people and animals, cars, motorcycles, etc. all at
a scale of ½" per foot. Five trains now run simultaneously, pausing
and waiting for each other as necessary. Don't miss Todd's own-design,
fully automated signal and operations system. Please note that the
lighting on this outdoor layout is most dramatic in the evening just
around sunset.
