LEAD, S.D. - A local couple that wants to renovate the former Black Hills &
Fort Pierre narrow gauge railroad roundhouse here will get a $25,000 boost
from the neighboring city of Deadwood, the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal
reported. Duane and Phyllis Sander want to preserve the building and make it
a tourist attraction.
The roundhouse, built in 1901, serviced BH&FP and Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy steam locomotives until 1930. Work has already begun on the $1
million renovation. Among attractions to be included are a railroad
interpretive center, artwork by local artist Ed Carr, a railroad-themed
restaurant, and a multimedia theater that will tell the story of the Black
Hills Gold Rush of 1876.
Both BH&FP and CB&Q operated branchline networks in this mining district of
the Black Hills.
