In my 1951 Q rule book, rule 699 describes yard signal indications for
both hump and flat yards.

Were these common in flat yards, or were they only used occasionally to
address sighting issues? I guess in some yards the engineer might not
have a clear view of person controlling the movements. Are there any
photos of these in the popular Q books or the web?

For flat yards it lists four indications: Stop, Shove forward, Kick and
Back up.

Regards,

Mark Bristow
