Suggest you find a copy of "Railroads of the Black Hills" by Mildred Fielder
which was published in 1964 and reissued in 1993. Also the CNW Society ran
an in depth three part series on the Black hills a few years back and those
issues are available.
Between the two you'll become fully informed on all aspects of Black Hills
RRing.
But to answer your question in a nut shell,like so many other branch lines
the business died off, moved away and much of what was left went to trucks.
