After reading this for some time now, it's obvious that no one has the BN
Annual for 1973. The picture of 5206 & 5208 that are pictured on page 50
clearly shows the walkways green.John

Lyle and I have been discussing this point for some time now.
I agree that it is likely that the stripe did continue across the flat
surface of the running boards...
the "Corporate Identification Program" was designed by an advertising agency
or graphics art
studio and, as such, had no real world railroading context as to what made
sense as far as
  placement of colors and paint.
The picture Lyle cites clearly shows the white "pistol grip" stripe continues
across the walkway,
at least on the as-delivered SD45s. I doubt that EMD would have done that
unless they had
customer supplied drawings specifying the paint to be applied in that manner.
Likewise the
same (il) logic would have been applied to the U23Cs being delivered at about
the same time.

(for whom time stopped when it became necessary for there to be "Menk the
Fink" buttons in the world
and Green is a color appropriate mostly only for Heavyweight Passenger Cars,
Gas Electric Motors, and Insulated
  Box Cars...)
