Richard is absolutely right...The north end of Rock Island's Burr Oak yard was
called Purington..There was a "shanty" there known as Purington Shanty....There
was also an "eternal flame"...consisting of a pipe stuck in the ground which
siphoned off the methane gas produced by the landfill which was created when
the Purington Company competed excavating the clay from the pit and it was
filled with Chicago Garbage.? The flame burned continually and provided a souce
of heat and light for any engine working at the north end of Burr Oak yard.

Purington Brick also had a big clay pit in Blue Island. Was between 119th St to
123rd and Rock Island main line (east side) and their "Suburban Line" to the
west. There was another brick yard along B&OCT in Blue Island, don't know if
that was Purington as well.
North end of RI yard was known as Purington.
