As a teenager, fifty seven years ago I worked in the Traffic Dept. of a
large Midwestern heavy equipment manufacturer. My job consisted of posting
(to a
ledger) and vouchering car load and LCL freight bills for payment. NOIBN
meant "Not Otherwise Identified By Name." This term was used in association
with what today could be called "generic" names. For example, a load of steel
forgings would be labeled on the bill as "Forgings -NOIBN." They could have
been small gear blanks, large sprockets, or shafts of some sort -- all
different sizes.
But on the freight bill they were just "Forgings -- NOIBN."

Also, LCL meant "less than car load."
