Hi all,

Tom, please accept my apologies for using your email as an negative example,
however it perfectly illustrates a practice that needs to happen on this
list more frequently. Yes, the question does follow along the ?other
history tidbits? part of the email, but the main theme or subject Tom?s
email is about ?Competing RR Riots.? Please, please, please when the topic
of your email does not match the Subject: line, CHANGE IT!!! The proper
Subject should read: ?Competing RR Riots ? (was The Ruling Grade at La
Grange and other history tidbits.)? That way it ties both subjects together
and provides for a smooth transition into a new topic or thread. Folks then
replying to the RR Riot thread would simply use ?Competing RR Riots? as the
subject and the original thread on The Ruling Grade would continue to use
that subject. Someone trying to follow the thread on the ruling grade at La
Grange would be frustrated that this email has nothing to do with that
topic, and someone interested in finding out about RR Riots would not find
it in the archives.

Also, we all need to get better at deleting the automatically appended
previous messages that are included when we hit reply. Please send only
your reply to the list. I?ve kept Tom?s original as I?m using it as an
example, but you?ll notice that I deleted the original message that he had
replied to.

I?m not trying to rule this list with an iron fist, but trying to educate
everyone on this list on procedures and protocols that are simply the best
for all.

Hello all

I have a question about "riots" between competing railroads - often at
the construction of junctions. Does anybody here know if riot had a
different use in the late 19th century than it does today? For
example, could this have been an exchange of shouts and jeers - or was
their out-and-out violence?

It is hard to imagine any rivalrious construction crews being
motivated to violence at the present.

Best,
Tom Cornillie
