The west end lead at CJ's Ashland Ave Yard was on a curve that went up near
the Brighton Park switch tenders shanty IIRC. The lead was split to a north and
south side with twenty tracks off of each. The switch crew had an extra man so
there was a "Field man" for the north and one "Field man" for the south side.
Switch foreman ran the lights, which worked about same as already described.
And of course the pin puller got the pins plus ran the bull switch. The engine
faced east which put engr on the outside of the curve, and I believe the light
pole was offset a ways from the shanty and pretty tall so the engr could see
it. Engine really couldn't be turned west because often there was train(s)
sitting on main next to curved lead and engrs view of light would have been
blocked if he was on inside of curve.
As late as 1972 the foremen still marked the cars for cuts and track rather
than give the other crew members a list.
