Ray Cottingham who, by his own admission, never worked for a railroad  got 
the right answer.
 
The "symbol" was indeed a crane with a broken neck embossed in the paper as  
a "watermark"..
 
No matter how "glowing" the references were in the written portion of the  
letter the broken necked crane was the "kiss of death" as far as employment was 
 
concerned.
