The year 1948 was a watershed year in the rail industry. That year the
national contracts were renewed with many changes,increases on wages,the start
of
the 5 day work week for yard jobs,establishment of vacations,etc. This
reflected
the changing attitude nationally toward labor and the general economic
improvements during the post war boom.
I was told from time to time by the "old heads" that prior to this time yard
jobs worked unless annulled or you laid off. The one thing I never asked was
did this mean yard assignments were advertised for 7 days a week or did they
have Sunday as a rest day ?
Anyone know ?
