An interesting tidbit to this thread. About two years ago, I had a
conversation with Bob Downing and Earl Currie and the BN had approached the
steel industry about having rail manufactured in a longer length to reduce
the number of welds. The steel industry said they couldn't retool for the
longer lengths. Consequently we now get a lot of our rail from Japan.

Rail was 39 ft. lengths and last time I knew, some were still shipped out
of the steel mills in this length.
