Steel...the west was allocated to the sole rail maker in the west. Most cartels
like that end with jailing of steel executives but no one wanted to do anything
in the rail industry or the Department of Justice.

An interesting tidbit to this thread. About two years ago, I had a
conversation with Bob Downing and Earl Currie and the BN had approached the
steel industry about having rail manufactured in a longer length to reduce
the number of welds. The steel industry said they couldn't retool for the
longer lengths. Consequently we now get a lot of our rail from Japan.

Rail was 39 ft. lengths and last time I knew, some were still shipped out
of the steel mills in this length.
