"When a CB&Q car, like the 86' boxes Rupert was asking about, were in
assigned or "captive" service, was it possible that they never
actually ran on Q rails? For example, if some of these cars were
assigned to carry Chevy engines, could it be that they ran between two
GM plants that were not even on or near Q rails?"
Tom,
I would never say never, but it is very real possibility that cars in
off-line pool service seldom see home rails. Typically the pool
contributions are based on mileage and/or division of revenue of the
total Ford parts business (using this example). The Qs cars join all
the other contributed cars at the manufacturing site(s) and the cars are
not directionally loaded so it's literally luck of the draw on if the Q
86' box is actually loaded to a destination that would cause the Q to
carry it.
