Some time back - I can't find it in the old messages - someone was asking about
the labelling for early furniture & lumber cars. In the latest Bulletin, on
page 14, is a photo from the late 1880's of a "lumber & furniture" car clearly
showing its designation. Unfortunately, the car number is not visible on the
side or clearly shown on the end but it appears to be from the 18000-18760
series.
The 1885 Rail Equipment & Mileage Guide notes "These are thirty-four foot box
cars marked "Lumber and Furniture" and are to be run exclusively between
Chicago and points on C. B. & Q. R. R. and its Western Connections; special
efforts must be made to load them promptly towards Chicago in preference to
common cars."
I think the italics were used to emphasis that these were not the standard 28
foot cars of the period, as they were apparently the only 34' boxes on the
roster at that time.
