Not so fast. For the Pullmans, you'd have to have the correct roof
ducting. Not an easy thing to do. The main problem limiting Pullman
side use (and THAT is exactly why the Branchline kits are made the
way they are, BTW) is that there is no correct non-A/C roof (on which
to apply the ducts). No pedimented non-A/C roof with the proper
width clerestory is yet available. That constitutes a huge [roblem,
and limits doing, say a CLOVER side. There simply is no roof available.
For the coaches, the Walthers roof is typically too wide (in terms of
the clerestory). I am hoping that the long promised Branchline
coach (not the NYC one) will have a narrow clerestory and be 80'.
Aside from those problems, the other problem with having Walthers as
core kits is the underbody details. The underbody SHOULD be unique
to car type/class. A CLOVER underbody can not be made from an 8-1-2
Walthers (it CAN from a Branchline with additional parts). The
Walthers' underbodies are pretty much generic. And they certainly
do not make a difference as to the specific A/C types used for the
specific A/C suites represented. IF you are going to use anything as
a core kit, use the Branchline PARTS - they make the core (floor &
vestibule), underbody details, brake details, etc. - all
separate. By far a better way to go to get a unique car. A
Walthers Pullman simply can't be made to represent anything but the
generic Pullman that it is meant to represent - and at that, generically.
(Which is why their versions of some of the CB&Q cars are dead wrong
for the Pullmans represented, as one instance.)

If we could get either NKP or Brass Car Sides to make just the sides,
Walther's
coaches and Pullmans etc. make fine core kits as the sides are
separate pieces.
Has anyone thought to ask either of these companies if they would
consider doing
them? John

One car that was mentioned here were the SSS rebuilds. Of course
car sides of
them aren't going to work with the Walthers 60 foot RPO or coach
models as a
core kit. But it would be really nice if NPK, Brass Car Sides, or
Branchline
could produce this model.
