Apparently, there were a number of solutions created by various railroads to
meet the interim necessity of moving grain in years in which grain harvests
were substantial. From page 172 (photo included) of UNION PACIFIC FREIGHT CARS
1936-1951 by Terry Metcalfe, the following caption accompanies a clear photo
of a relevant car:
"Freight car shortages caused by extraordinary harvests prompted the UP to
apply temporary roofs to many of its hoppers and ballast cars. The roof
applied
to this HK-50-4 was quite similar to the ones on the CH-70-1 and CH-70-2
Covered Hoppers. This photo dates from the mid to late 1940s."
The metal roof with hatches, grabs, and a center walkway is a removable
structure.
