Red Owl grocery stores were indeed common on the upper end of Lines
East with stores in MN, Wis & Iowa into the early 1990's. Like many
companies, their logo changed in design over the years (the owl became
less of a 'real' owl and more of a stylized one). This truck would be
appropriate to those modeling the very end of the Q. Another
good "Granger Country" truck line available at least in H.O. is
Gateway, a regional carrier out of LeCrosse from the 20's into the
70's. Glendenning was another big name in the Minn, Wis, northern
Iowa area in the 30's to the 70's.
I can also vouch for Hamm's beer reefers showing up on the Q as one
of the 1st snapshots I took of a Burlington train was one that
included an "Athearn" scheme Hamm's reefer going thru E. Dubuque in
the early 60's. And of course Heileman's Old Style, Peerless and
Potosi were "on-line" for those seeking authentic for the Q rolling
stock and Budweiser's "Manufacturer's RR" reefers showed up on every
line (causing the eventual demise of many of their smaller
competitors). Gerald
