The Calendars - Arch was very observant. As we know, there are only
8 or 9 different "years" over the decades; i.e. January will start
on "x" day of the week on a repetitive basis (leap yrs throw off a
few).
These calendars are fake (I have an original). Now it is possible
the sellers bought then in good faith because after all even a Q fan,
unless he is a serious collector of a particular class of items
(TT's, passes, calendars, menus, china, etc) may not catch the repro
and certainly not a generic RR collector or antique dealer (if repro
is done well). And if you don't want to spend the $50-100 to have an
original but want to go $10 for something like this for a train room,
fine. Just know what you are buying.
As for the PZ menu - wish the party who saw it @ Dbq had said
something to me as I have about 200 different original Q menus (other
menu collector mbrs who were present @ Dbq included Bill Glick & Brad
Slaney). Al Holck has a lot of TT's & Arch Hayden is tops with
lanterns and H&StJ items, etc. MArk Hamre was also present & knows
hardware & CB&N very well. There are a number of us who can fairly
quickly tell you if something is a repro or 'fantasy' item. When I
did my clinic on Q collectibles @ St. L, I showed several fakes such
as the 1878 TT. When it comes to menus in particular, most
originals had a variety of inside printing (B, L, D, special groups,
years, etc) that means if you suddenly see 3 vintage menus identical
inside & out, you should be suspicious. Backs of stock menus also
varied (I have a stock TCZ menu with 4 variations on its back
design). Note too we offered a repro Q TCZ menu for dinner @ Dbq.
It was for a Shriner trip (the original in my collection came from
the Mason himself whom I met at a Masonic function). I chose it as it
was an uncommon variation of a stock cover. There was also a repro
menu @ the Galesburg meet for the Q-related Grier's restaurant chain.
"Fantasy" items: For example, on eBay & at RR shows are clear glass
tumblers with red/black BR herald. These did NOT exist on the Q.
Ditto for some wrist & pocket watches, cannery, badges, etc. Think
twice before spending premium dollars for such items. IF you want a
Q glass to drink from fine, but buy at as a cheap glass, not as an
expensive original dining car artifact.
When in doubt, contact one of our BRHS mbrs who has expertise in
certain areas. We are always happy to help! Gerald
