Hi Charlie,
Technically (as said comically many times before) a four legged base
is not a 'tripod'. As a reminder, the recent Diesel Era that was part
one of the SW7 series has photos of both styles on said locomotive. I
don't have it at my disposal so I can't speak for how much detail they
provide. I recall it showing a 4-legged mount in at least one photo.
I did some poking around in some of my books and find nothing that is
close enough to provide much detail. A good shot partially showing a
flared base is Mike Spoor's Vol.#2, page14 of an SW-1. Another
reasonable shot of this type is Vol 3, page 49 of an NW-2 with one
installed. BTW, others with better knowledge will comment of course, but
I've never seen one on a base on an F-unit, only on SW/NW's (and I think
some VO's). Mr. Spoor's vol.4, page 55 has an F from above, showing the
wheel not much above the roof surface. If this is typical, then a flared
base wouldn't have been needed in my opinion. All of the F-unit photos
I've ever seen where I've noticed a wagon wheel have been too low of an
angle to see how it was mounted. Having said that, I noticed that some
of the SWs had a reinforcing bracket behind and against the staff. Could
this have also been used on some F's? Enquiring minds want to know. :-D

 C'ya at the store :) ,
Lyle
