The CBQ's only routes in South Dakota were the mainline through Crawford
NE, Edgemont SD and Newcastle WY plus the lines from Edgemont to the
Deadwood-Lead area (including their subsidiary Deadwood Central, which
was partially electrified) and branches to such places as Hot Springs,
Keystone and Reno. The branches north of Edgemont are either abandoned
or operated by the Black Hills Central.
In contrast the BNSF operates hundreds of miles of ex-Milwaukee and
Great Northern trackage in South Dakota. However, none of it goes near
Rapid City. See their website at www.bnsf.com for a map.
