Glen
Like Russ I also worked at Congress Park for a while before going to House
9(Cicero) as a Train Dispatcher
East bound trains would set out cars direct to the south wye for the IHB to
pull. If a train was too long to fit between Maple Ave. in Brookfield(Congress
Park is in the town of Brookfield) and La Grange Road in LaGrange the train
would set out the cars on the siding at Nabisco(between Eola and Rt. 59 in
Naperville) Then a train which would fit would pick up the cars at Nabisco and
set them and his cars at Congress Park.
There use to be a hand throw crossover just east of Maple Ave. and as a train
dispatcher you could bring an eastbound train down main 2 and set out thru the
crossover. An eastbound train on main 3 would get a lunar signal (when we
still used them)on main 3 at Congress Park and come down to the crossover.
Once the guy on the middle set out and locked the crossover back up the cab
signals would give the eastbounder on 3 a better aspect and he could take off
getting by while the train on track 2 got his air back and headed into the yard
at Cicero.
The five track yard on the north side was used for inbound interchange from the
IHB
In '73 when I worked there and could see the lists and waybills we moved a lot
of Apples, Pears, Potatoes to the IHB with the empties coming back in the yard
later. About once a week we got a coal train in twin and triple hoppers for
Argo Starch with the empties back a couple days later(came from southern
Illinois) We would get one to two cars of tin plate a day (in 40 foot Chinese
red box cars) from the Harbor which would go north in train 185 about 2PM the
next day
