Some info from a letter printed in the April 1992 Model Railroader
magazine:
"I enjoyed Jim Hediger's article on the New York Central Flexi-Van
flatcars in the February 1992 issue." [of Model Railroader]
"He states, though, that the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy did not
purchase any flatcars. To set the record straight, the CB&Q did
purchase 25 Flexi-Van flatcars from the Maxson Corp., St. Paul, MN in
1968. These were numbered 96000-96024. The cars were painted Chinese
Red and came with three different types of trucks: 96000-96014 came on
Rockwell Hi-Speed trucks, 96015-96019 on A-3 trucks, and 96020-96024
on Symington Wayne trucks."
"These flatcars were purchased primarily for handling mail between
Chicago, St. Paul, Kansas City, and Denver. The Q also purchased from
Strick Co., 50 Flexi-Van containers numbered CBQ 202000-202049."
The letter came from Dan Holbrook, Range Research, Aurora, IL.
Any comments on the use of the Flexi-Vans for mail service out of
Chicago? Also, if Walthers used the article from MR and didn't check
out its accuracies, that may be why they aren't releasing the cars in
CB&Q, only the containers. Does anyone know of a good photo or
painting diagram of the Flexi-Van cars in CB&Q?
