I recently purchased a ceramic spittoon, it's the one with green outside,
gold trim, white inside and the "Burlington Route" logo in gold on the lip.
It is marked "Hall", a manufacturer of china pottery. On the bottom of the
spittoon, someone wrote in felt pen, "May 5 1949".
I have seen this one and the backed enameled style frequenty listed on ebay.
I would like to know the history of both spittons and in general how old and
where these were used. I would think that the baked enameled ones would have
been used on the passenger cars, as these would get a lot of rough handling.
Would the ceramic ones have been used in Q office building/depots?
When were these last used? I have searched through several book, hoping to
find photos that would show these but have not yet found any.
Thanks
