March 3, 2005 marks 35 years since creation of Burlington Northern. One of
the reasons for mergers is the ability to abandon some or all of a route when
the merger partners had duplicate routes. Certainly, this was a factor after
creation of BN, most notably with regard to Great Northern and Northern Pacific
routes, which would most likely both have trackage between common points.
However, due the general change in traffic patterns throughout North America,
numerous other railroad lines have been abandoned, regardless of whether doing
so was a result of a merger.

What follows is an attempt to document the trackage that remains today versus
that on March 3, 1970 on the former Great Northern, Northern Pacific,
Burlington Route, and Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railways; Also included is
that
of the Milwaukee Road, though not a merger partner in BN, is generally
considered to have been greatly affected by the BN merger.

The mileage is based on what is in use today versus that indicated in the
Official Guide of the Railways from March, 1970. Some of the routes shown are
admittedly subjective, and need to be considering numerous factors involved.
For the most part, if a route is still in service today and is part of a
through
route that was used by the predecessor railroad, that line is shown. Some
examples:

1.) Track to Billings, Montana is included as a CB&Q route that is still in
service today because CB&Q had trackage rights to Billings on NP from Huntley
and Fromberg and was a major contributor to the tonnage along the route, and it
continues as such today. In every case the railroad which owned the track is
shown, even if its route is not a prime contributor. In the same
geographical area, NP is given mileage credit from Laurel to Fromberg, even
though this
line was part of a route to Bridger, which is abandoned beyond Fromberg, and
that the NP portion of the route contributes no traffic today.

2.) NP had trackage rights on GN from Mossmain to Hesper to access its line
to Rapelje, and though Mossmain to Hesper continues in use today, the route
from Hesper to Rapelje is abandoned and therefore, former NP trackage does not
contribute to traffic on the line from Mossmain to Hesper today, and this
segment is not credited as trackage in use by the NP.

3.) SP&S is credited as serving Spokane, even though its original route is
gone, but the route is included as the "new" line (constructed after GN/SP&S
station facilities in Spokane were abandoned for the Expo ‘74 site) as the
route
continues to contribute tonnage today.

4.) MILW had trackage rights on NP from St. Paul to Duluth, Superior, and
Cloquet. When the Milwaukee Road was purchased by Soo Line, Soo Line, which
now
is simply known by its then-parent Canadian Pacific, retained trackage rights
between the Twin Cities and Twin Ports as is the case today. However, by this
time of the disappearance of the MILW and into today, the NP route from the
Twin Cities to the Twin Ports ceased being a through route and CP trains use
former GN trackage. Mileage for the MILW is given as the part of the NP route
still in service because the successor to the MILW service remains today;
however, the entire route cannot be shown as MILW mileage today for it should
not
be given equal mileage with that of the GN route which remains nor should it be
credited with more miles than the NP route which is partially abandoned, but
had its own line.

Any line considered "in service" is indicated as such, whether it be a
heavily used main line (which would be obvious), or used as a tourist line.

Numerous sources were used for determining mileage, notably Official Railway
Guides from various years, several volumes of the Rand McNally "Handy Railroad
Atlas of the United States", Harry Ladd's "U.S. Railroad Traffic Atlas,"
various editions of Steam Powered Video's "Railroad Atlas of North America," as
well as well as some railroad employee timetables. Some lines were estimates
when exact mileage was not available by any source.

I'd be interested in any corrections that are necessary to this. The lines
indicated are that shown in an Official Guide from March of 1970. Of course,
the railroads did not always readily update their maps when lines were
abandoned, so some lines that are shown as being in use in 1970 may not have
been.
Others might be abandoned now and do not show as such. And, I will say that
without having the entire collection of all employee timetables for all the
railroads, the mileage is not exact. Often times, mileage in the Official
Guide
is given from one station, where in reality the junction point is a couple
miles out of town.

The mileages are given in line segments, followed by the mileage in 1970 and
then mileage still in use in 2005. I apologize that the structure of the
columns will not remain when transmitted, so a straight line of figures, which
is
easier on the eye, will not be maintained. When a segment is no longer
completely in service or completely abandoned, the exceptions are noted below,
with
the amount of mileage still in place.

Overall, I hope some find this of interest, and I hope to update this with
the corrections received.

--Mark Meyer
