The BRHS Archives has a CB&Q painting & styling diagram for the Chinese Red
scheme, and it call for a black underbody.

I agree with Dave.... if my memory serves all the waycars I crawled under in
the sixties were originally painted the same color as the sides.... at least
the mineral red ones.... can't say for the Chinese Red jobs..
