SJH - George Donaldson, the CB&Q engineer who was killed, oftentimes adjusted
his schedule so he could run the 5632 on Chicago/Galesburg fantrips. Mr.
Donaldson also had an O guage model railroad in the basement of his home that I
visited as a teenager with my Dad who was CB&Q Chicago Div. Supt. at the time.
Yes, it was a terrible accident.
I remember that my Dad was visably shaken when he got the news. One of the
past BRHS "Bulletins" covered the collision and there are several color
photographs that show my Dad directing the clean-up operations alongside the
wrecked
equipment. I still have a copy of the Chicago Tribune that carried the
collision as a front page story.
