The sheet metal shield below the smokebox protected the Worthington
hot water pump. The change from coal to oil had nothing to do with
this shield.
The 5625 was the only O5 that got a "face lift" by relocating the
hot pump to the front end of the running board on the Engineer's
side and installing the gear box required to drive the poppett valve
arrangement applied to the engine.
