I have been gathering CZ consists and have about 30 some odd from years
1954 through 1969. A good percentage of them (over 10%) have a D&RGW 124x
coach in the consist (this is one of the P-S built, C&O order
coaches). Now, it makes sense prior to the conversion of the section
sleepers to straight top coaches as a quick way to add capacity. And,
these were some of the nicest coaches on any of the three systems. But...

The D&RGW is in the middle of the route. It would mean that the car would
have to be picked up in Denver (or Salt Lake City, but more likely Denver)
taken to Chicago (or Oakland, but more likely Chicago) and there added to
the consist. Of course it likely would have been en train to either
destination, but would it have been sold as revenue space? It would be
unlikely that the traffic demands would be Denver East or West. And given
that choice, why not a CB&Q coach that would have a SILVER name and look
like the rest of the train? The D&RGW likely had extra capacity as 7
coaches was more than enough to handle the Prospectors. So it is likely
that one was usually "extra". Even if two were assigned to the Royal
Gorge. And the Q was always very close with equipment requirements (to the
point of using the overnighting CZ equipment on an overnight KC train and
thus not needing to purchase a trainset).

My best guess is that the coach would be deadheading to the terminals (and
back) but I'd like to know if this type of move was typical on other
trains. Of course the coaches weren't the only P-S cars to see service on
the CZ, but by far the most seen. The Pullmans (5-6-5's) were also seen
occasionally, and just about anything could be seen on a 2nd section.

thanks!
