Paul,

A complicated question. As new power was purchased the GP7's
and SD7's were used less and less in through train service
and trickled down to local service.

In the mid 60's they had disposed of the NW1's, the SW's, the
S2's, and the VO1000's. Each of these groups required something
as a replacement. The NW1's and some of the VO1000's were Coach
Yard units. NW2's had to be brought in for those jobs. A few
more NW2's were required at Cicero to replace the VO1000's but
that was also at the time that many of the freight house jobs
were being abolished as that traffic moved to TOFC. At places
like Oregon this meant a GP7 replacing a NW2. The old habit of
the Rock Falls and East End locals sharing a small group of
NW2's that had existed since steam days was also adjusted to get
more GP7's involved.

The SW's had been used in the lightest work and some of those jobs
no longer even needed a unit as branch lines were abandoned or
the assignment of a unit to a smaller location was just discontinued.

The new SW1200's that were purchased were plugged in all over the
system.

The SW1000's took over the Omaha/Council Bluffs area with the
displaced units moving down to St Joseph and Kansas City to
replace VO1000's.

The delivery of the GE's must have freed up some SD9's which
could have gone into McCook or Denver yard service. I'm not
that knowledgeable on Lines West.

Of course all these issues were affected by traffic volumes.

With the delivery of the GP40's some of the GP20's started to
stay in Mainline secondary service.

Just some food for thought,

Russ

  Russ,

This then begs the question of what *was* predominantly used for power on
Lines East...and also on branches...again in the late 1960's era?

  Thanks . . .
