Jonathan,
I'll help on the 1st http://www.1880strain.com I think this is their web site
if not use a search engine and hunt for 1880's train in South Dakota. They book
for sale, they take credit cards, and one can call. By the way the Q narrow
gauge engine that went to the C&S is my favorite. Gotta love 2-7-0 outside
frame locomotives and lo and behold the MDC outside frame comes very close to
that locomotive. Also I belong to the Burlington Route Historical Society and
they recently had a Bulletin on the Hills. To me the addition of Cambria, WY
the coal town that supplied thew Hills with coal made it worth it all. But its
my favorite place!

Paul, DC, Harold, et al. --
Besides the sources Paul mentions, there were three articles by Scott
Zieske in the Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette -- two (Jan/Feb 1980 and
Mar/Apr 1980) on the C&NW's narrow gauge lines and equipment, with an
emphasis on their unique 4-8-0s, and one (May/Jun 1981) on the Deadwood
Central (Burlington) electric line. The May/June '81 Gazette is still
available as a back issue (amazing!), and IIRC the magazine has a photocopy
service for OP articles. Don't know how much it costs or how long it takes.
If I'm remembering wrong and you really want these articles, contact me
off-list.
In his bibliography, Zieske also cites a couple articles that appeared in
the July, 1972, NMRA Bulletin (which I don't have). And there's a note from
the Gazette editor saying that Edmund Collins, Trexler Ave, Box 58,
Kutztown, PA 19530, has 10 plans available for the narrow gauge railroads
in the Black Hills. Of course, that information is almost a quarter century
old now, so I have no idea about the current availability of those plans.
Now I have a couple questions perhaps one of you (or another list-er) might
help me with.
First, where can I purchase Rick Mills's "125 Years of Black Hills
Railroads?" I think this is a fairly new book, currently in print, but so
far I've been unable to locate it. Just tried Caboose Hobbies in Denver,
but no luck (they DID have one copy of Fielder's "RRs of the Black Hills,"
though). Anyway, it appears the Polar Express has departed without me this
year, so I don't hold out much hope of Santa coming through. But since you
seem to have a line to the Old Gent, Paul, perhaps you might ask him (her?)
where a copy might be had.
Second, although my own narrow gauge interest is mainly C&S (the other
major "Burlington" NG line), I've always admired those CB&Q Black Hills NG
wooden ore cars, as shown on p. 79 of Mildred Fielder's book. Can you or
anyone tell me anything about the prototype? Dimensions? Correct numbers?
Does anyone know of plans or diagrams for these cars? Years ago, I bought a
few of the Taurus kits (later manufactured by Classic Miniatures) for a 20'
ore car, in the hope of modeling the Burlington cars. They look pretty
close to the prototype at first glance, but I'd be grateful for any more
information.
Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving,
Jonathan
