Savanna is at the jct. of the C&I (to Aurora and Chicago)and the Pea Vine(to
Galesburg) so some train may have had setouts and pickups.
In the days pre pool waycars the waycars would have to be changed.
In the late '70-early '80's the chief dispatcher would have to figure out if
the trains coming south had enough power and make sure the train would go up
over the C&I roller coaster or have to operate "around the horn" Via the
Pea vine to Denrock and then to Mendota(basic one grade up and one down
verses the C&I roller coaster.
Savanna was also the crew change point. Up until the Long Pool went into
effect crews worked Cicero to Savanna: Galesburg to Savanna: Savanna to
North Lacrosse.
SO the chief had to make sure there were enough crews in the pool to cover
all trains to be operated.
Hope this helps a little
