Hi All;

I wonder if any of you locomotive historians might be able to shed some light
on the following.

Based on what information I presently have the following seems to be true.

The CB&Q and all of its subsidiaries [those railroads that would eventually
become a part of The Q] purchased but one Baldwin locomotive through 1865. This
engine was bought for/by The Council Bluffs & St. Joseph RR, and was the
following.

Baldwin 1437 12/65 Council Bluffs & St Joseph "Wavansa"? 4-4-0
16x24-54

However, the Q bought a near new BLW loco in 1864 from the L&FRR as by
presidential decree the L&F was to be regauged 'Broad 5' for use by The US
Military RRs. This particular engine could not be regauged so was sold. The
engine was:

Baldwin 1164 8/63 5' Louisville & Frankfort "Woodford" 4-4-0 15x24-56

This loco probably became H&StJ # 34 named "A.L. Foster" in 1864.

There was also one other loco delivered to the H&StJ in about 1864, but the
information is incomplete. It was acquired through J. P. Laird [a dealer?], and
was numbered 33 and named "Chicago" on the H&StJ. There is no mention of
Builder only that it was a 4-4-0 with no specs given.

H&StJ # 32 was a Manchester engine [first on the road] purchased from the Q
also in 1864, and returned to them a few years later. Following this engine the
H&StJ bought from Manchester almost exclusively up through 1871. The exceptions
being a pair of Hinkleys and Rogers. I do not know the identy of this ex Q
Manchester, but on The H&StJ it was given the name "Quincy".

Any help in sorting out these locomotives will be most appreciated, and I thank
you in advance for any help you may offer.

Cheers,

Rory
