By golly, there is a Portland, OH!  The H&St. J only reached as far as
Bevier on May 11, 1858, and the line eastward from St. Joe had only
progressed 10 miles by August 1, 1858.

What railroad would he have taken from Portland, OR???  The CP and UP did
not start building until 1862 and it wasn't completed until 1869.
There were no other lines from west to east for a couple of years, certainly
not before 1860.  If he was coming from OH instead of OR that would be
different.
