Extracts from the Railway Equipment and Mileage Guide for June 1885 (presumed
to be the forerunner of the ORER's - the name had changed by December 1887)

"Instructions to Car Distributers, Agents, and Others:
Air brake cars
No. 14550 to 14599 have yellow doors with green bar in centre from top to
bottom, and are to be used exclusively for fast time freight between Chicago
and Denver via the B & M in Neb.
No. 14600 to 14649, painted yellow, have black doors, and on each door an
oblique cross of red and white bars; they are marked "Chicago and Pacific
Coast Fast Freight Line" and must be used only for fast time freight between
Chicago and points on the Pacific Coast via the AT&SFRR"

(cars 18000 to 18049 were also equipped with air brake but were unassigned,
and no indication given of paint scheme)

"Lumber and Furniture Cars - Nos. 18000 to 18760. These are thirty-four foot
boxcars marked "Lumber and Furniture" and are to be run exclusively between
Chicago and points on the CB&QRR and its Western Connections; special efforts
must be made to head them promptly towards Chicago in preference to common
cars."

"Coal Cars - These cars are marked or boarded showing to which Division they
belonged and where they must be returned as soon as empty. Delay in unloading
Coal Cars, or their detention when empty, on their own or other Divisions, must
not be permitted. It is imperative that all concerned handle Coal Cars
promptly."

(The spelling errors and italics are as per the original)

Dining cars were listed as Brevoort, Cosmopolitan, Denver, San Francisco and
Windsor, and there were 21 Pullman cars assigned including Aurora, Burlington,
Galesburg, Kewanee, Mendota, Ottumwa, Quincy, Lincoln and Plattsmouth to
provide a local flavour.

The numbering system for passenger cars was evidently being changed at this
time, as baggage 1, 5, 10, 12, 14, 16, 30, 32 and 61 "will be renumbered as
fast as practicable to New Series", that is 700 to 748 inclusive.

Have a great weekend

Rupert
