I spoke with folks @ the plant - they had 6 such hoppers which are
being replaced with some newer used hoppers. 2 were sold for scrap
but the cost of moving them (needed 2 cranes to put on flat bed) was
almost as much as what they got in scrap, thus the willingness to
consider donating the remaining 4 (which are being kept til the
replacement cars come in). These 4 are painted orange. The plant
mgr, Joe Ebens, who is the only one who can say yes or no to a
donation (and when), would know their history. As they have friction
bearings the plant's rail hauler will not transport, thus the
necessity of removing the trucks and lifting hoppers unto a flat bed
(cost of $2400-2600). May be more than a museum would want to pay
for covered hoppers unless they have someone who would pickup &
transport for free or reduced rate.
