Brad-
You have innocently lobbed a live grenade into the forum....
The color is called "Imitation Aluminum".
There are, IMHO, there were two basic formulations of the paint (there was a
period when new and repainted units came out darker than earlier and later
ones). Both are gray-white. the color could look like anything from
Kelvinator Refrigerator White (a freshly painted unit still inside the West
Burlington Shops) to almost dark gray, with tinges of yellow and blues
depending on the sky conditions, sunlight, crud, weathering, etc..
The same paint was used on the Rock Island and Boston & Maine E Units, and I
am told their societies break out in fist fights over whether the color is
white, silver or gray. At least we don't think it is silver.
