Found a bklt for the June 15, 1941 excursion discussed a bit
earlier on the list - now all we need is to confirm which loco(s)
were used and possibly what type of passenger cars? (inside of cover
shows 5634 & 35 in a 'then & now' comparison but doubt 5634 was
used). The Q produced a glossy cover bklt with 13 single pages inside
with a detailed itinerary for the trip. In 13&1/4 hrs, fans (under
auspices of the RR Club of Chicago) made a R/T from Chicago as
follows:
Chi to Aurora & then down Streator branch & NW from Streator thru
LaSalle to Zearing. Then followed the main back toward Chi as far as
Mendota where they rejoined the branch line network to Denrock, then
to Sterling and back east to Earlville with main line running back
thru Aurora to Chi. Special note is made of 5 past & present
shortlines to be seen: Illinois Midland @ Millington, the abandoned
Lowell & Southern @ L&S Jct, the LaSalle & Bureau County, the Hooppole
Yorktown & Tampico and the Lee Co. Electric. ROW's of abandoned CA&E
and Fox & Illinois Union and Chi, Ottawa & Peoria are also noted.
Best 'new' thing I learned was the following notation (for all you
arborist's): Burgess Jct "Note grove of catalpas @ Jct. This & similar
groves were planted on RR property by a former Burlington Gen.
Superintendent who planned to use the wood derived therefrom for
ties, fence posts, etc. Other similar catalpa groves will be
observed enroute today." (Note: for the non-Boy Scouts; catalpas
have large 'elephant ear' leaves with monkey tail (sword-like) seed
pods handing down - no other tree looks like them (also very perfumed
white flowers for one week every spring). Anyone aware of this
forestry effort by the Q or recall noting such groves elsewhere?
I've to Burgess Jct but was not looking for trees but rather the old
branch.
The handout also goes in great detail on what the Q was doing work-
wise @ Western Ave., Eola, Aurora, Montgomery, Yagan Pit, etc at the
time. What a trip! (not to mention a highly cooperative mgt!) Gerald
