Yes O-5a's were coal burners and the O-5b's were oil burners.
If, by CB&Q steam engine book, you mean "Steam Locomotives of the
Burlington Route" by Corbin and Kerka then get your magnifying glass and check
out
the "Assignment of Locomotives and Motor Cars February 1, 1952" on page 293.
It will tell you which O-5's were converted to oil. Check the key to the
symbols used on the chart at the bottom. As the to the reasons for converting
to
oil, you will have to get somone else to explain the Q's thinking, as I have
no knowledge on that topic.
You might also want to find a copy of the July 1970 Model Railroader
magazine that featured centerfold drawings and some photo's of CB&Q O-5's.
