Rupert,

Not that I can think of. How these terms are used is
sort of a Regional or Railroad thing.

Every time you move to a different territory there are
always a few ways you have to alter your language to
communicate properly. For example on the McCook job
you have yard engines on 3rd shift 5 nights a week and
a Roadswitcher at Crete 6 nights a week. If you want
to get along with those crews you have to use different
terminology at all three places. As in:

Crete    = "BNSF 2160"
Hastings = "Hastings Switcher"
McCook   = "McCook Yard Foreman"

If you do not chose to call crews what they want to be
called there will be a subtle drop in cooperation.

Most of the places I've had to interface with "The Big
Road" they used the terminology; "Patch Crew" But where
does that come from? Could be UP-MP-C&NW-D&RGW-MKT-SP-WP.
Could also be that those roads used different terms and
as people who used them retire some system wide usage
will take over.

Moving back to the BNSF since the BN merger took place so
long ago that process had already happened. The GN-NP-CB&Q
were not all that different in their languages anyway.
The SLSF had it's own way of speaking and will probably
continue to do so. Have never Dispatched a SLSF territory
and probably never will. As to the AT&SF they were probably
pretty close to the CB&Q usage.

Here are some terms. If you look at them they are similar.

Dog Catch = Everyone seems to understand.
Hog Law = The hours of service regulation.
Die = Run out of time on above [expire].
Dog Catch Crew = Has been covered.
Patch Crew = Covered in this e-mail.
Dog Catch, Multiple Trips = This is a Lincoln thing. Have never
                             heard it used elsewhere.
Relief Crew = More of a "Official term" but if you
                             use it almost everyone understands.
Hog Lawed = Turning a noun into a verb.
Dog Caught = Turning a noun into a verb.

I'm sure there are many more but this may get someone who
understands the backgrounds contribute a little knowledge.

  Russ

  Thanks for the explanation of these terms. Is there any history behind the
  "dog catches" terminology?
