Here are several questions for the steam locomotive experts on the
list. Q's O-5's were by class designation, technically freight power.
However, there are numerous photos of O-5's pulling heavier passenger
trains, such as the Empire Builder, in the regular service (not fan
trip). In such service, they would have steam connections at the rear
of the tender to heat (and cool) the train.
My question is: were all 36 O-5's equipped with steam connections at
the rear of the tender or were they piped for steam and the rear
connection applied only to some or when needed ( a lot of work, I
suspect)? In addition, if applied to all, were they equipped from the
date of original construction? Two other questions. Were any other
non-passenger steam locomotives regularly equipped with steam
connections (there are a few photos of O-1a's on passenger trains,
including winter shots)? Did O-5's ever pull the articulated Zephyr
equipment as S-4's did (overkill)?
