The question as to where/why this odd box car originated was posed to
this site by Rupert Gamlen a month or so ago for his on-going work on
an all-time CB&Q frt car listing. I could not find an answer in my
resources and neither could anyone on this list apparently so I asked
a couple Q fans NOT on the list and got a definitive answer. In the
future when we have a good question like this for an on-going
research project that all of us will benefit from (all us Q fans that
is which is hopefully why you are a mbr!),if none of us on list have
the answer lets go the extra mile and ask others who do not subscribe.
Now the answer:
Per Al Hoffman who has an old CB&Q frt car diagram book - it was
built as a "sample" boxcar @ Aurora Shops in 1914 very nearly
identical to the XM class purchased from Haskell & Barker the same yr
(no word as to which came 1st but Q records use the word "sample").
It should have been numbered as last car in the XM20 class but for
whatever reason was added as 1st # in the XM21-22-23 class where
Rupert found it, No word as to when scrapped.
Gerald
(And as always if you are a BRHS mbr and have a good question that
would benefit from a photo AND being asked of 1500+ CB&Q fans, send
it to the BRHS Post Office Box in LaGrange or email to Dave Lotz for
him to handle as a BRHS question to the Society - we all benefit!)
