The line change at McPherson appears to be part of a large line
change from Villisca to Emerson, IA., including realignments through
Stanton and Red Oak. The old CB&Q R/W maps show a new alignment from
these two points that criss-crosses the original line several times.
It is possible that the line change was done in stages, but the angle
of intersection between the old and new lines where they cross
indicates to me that the line change was planned as one large project.
The reason for the line change would have been to reduce curves and
grade. The date of the line change was probably 1902 or 1903. An
article on the Red Oak depot places the date of the line change as
1902. Several concrete trestle bridges on the line change have dates
of 1903. And there is a reference on one map at Stanton that the
original line was taken up through town in 1903.
While the relocated line goes through McPherson, the original line
was located slightly to the south, going through Hawthorn. From
looking at the maps, it would be very interesting to try and trace
this line change on the ground today.
