Merry Christmas! Am again going to offer some distilled data (the uncommon
kind!) for all the modelers and fans on the list for your
use at this time of year. But 1st a commercial.
I heartily agree with Dave's praise of Rupert for the labor of love he does
in compiling and enumerating all the data & photos from our
BRHS publications so that when you or I want to see a photo or info on a
particular piece of rolling stock, depot, etc. we do NOT have
to thumb thru multiple issues of Zephyrs, BB's, etc. If you have ever done
work like this (i.e. CAREFULLY reading and pulling out all
the info from a magazine), you know how tedious it is, especially if done well.
Thanks Rupert! Which speaks to an issue with BRHS.
Too few members do far too much work! Some have 'burnt out' & are inactive.
Have you done your bit to help? Yes, paying dues is
important (very important!) but the nature of a volunteer group is that the
"product" not only needs $$$ to be published and mailed
& to hold meets BUT also needs YOUR time & talent to make it run. This is NOT
Model Railroader or Railfan magazine - info in ALL
BRHS publications is only as complete as there are members to assist in sharing
information. Meets are as good as there are mbrs
volunteering. We also need each of us to recruit members, etc to insure the
long term health of BRHS AND to bring in more sources
of info. Yes, I know a common reply is "I'm too young to recall anything about
the Burlington OR I only have a couple timetables or
one OER". Fine, but do you share what ever you do have? Some have very
extensive collections of Q items; that said I am always
finding "new" things from other members who have far smaller collections. No
one member "has it all" - the one bit of info you have
may be the piece needed! Don't be shy, share what you have. Example: Rupert is
also coming up with an all-time list of CB&Q freight
cars, much of the data coming from OER's. Yes despite his requests for copies
of Burlington pages to glean info from, how many of
the 650 mbrs of this Yahoo group or the 1500 mbrs of BRHS (many the same I
realize) have responded? Only have 1 OER or maybe
don't have any but know someone who does? How about emailing Rupert with the
date(s) you have access to & see if he needs it?
We all benefit because a Society is only as good as the cumulative efforts of
its members! Thus ends my sermon for the year....
Thanks for listening!
Ever wonder why foreign road emptys appear to be going in the wrong
direction? How should you group foreign emptys on your
layout to be prototypical to Burlington practice? Herein the answer: (from
May 1, 1940 CB&Q Distribution Chart for Agts, etc.)
Foreign road emptys might go the "wrong way' if a) picking up a load going to
a point on said foreign road or b) there is shortage of
such cars on the host road or c) being sent to a designated collection point
for that railroad. The Burlington, traditionally a car-rich
road, kept a sufficient fleet of suitable cars for most of its loadings. This
meant a larger investment in equipment but also happier
customers and more earnings from frt car rentals & per diem payments). And of
course the Q, as true of most RR's with sufficient
equipment of their own, would quickly send MTY foreign cars home to save on per
diems and to keep ladings to themself for max.
income. (which contributed to the 106 yrs without missing a dividend!)
Connecting foreign roads would have (per Car Service Rules & a common stencil
on frt cars) cars routed to the nearest interchange
point or best return route. I.E. if a GN box was emptied in Kansas City, it
would be sent to Sioux City; if emptied in Dubuque, it would
be sent to St. Paul; in either case the closest interchange & best route. Car
Service Rules listed the Junction Points to be used.
(NOTE: not ALL junctions between railroads were normally used as interchange
points). But what of the many RR's that did NOT
directly interchange with the Burlington??? Where to send an empty BAR reefer?
Why might it be seen traveling west on the Q?
The Q placed all non-connecting foreign roads into 6 groups: #1 Eastern, #2
Northern, #3 Northwestern; #4 Western; #5 South & SW
& #6 South & SE. Following are the CB&Q points to which said road's MTY cars
were to be routed & some examples of such RR's:
#1 - Beardstown, Chicago, Congress Park, Eola, Litchfield, Peoria, Streator,
Smithboro, Sorento, St. Louis & Zearing (ACY, D&H,
MEC, NYO&W, WM)
#2 - Billings, Clinton, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Dubuque, Galena, Laurel,
Monmouth, Omaha, Peoria, Sioux City, Sterling,
Tri-Cities (Davenport/Moline/Rock Island) & Mpls/St. Paul (Algoma Central, CN*,
DW&P, DM&IR)
#3 - Billings, Council Bluffs, Denver, Laurel, Omaha, Sioux City, Mpls/St. Paul
(CP*, OSL*. SP&S*)
#4 - Denver & all Missouri River Jcts (FtW&D*, OSL*, WP)
#5 - Atchison, Beatrice, Concordia, Denver, K.C., Leavenworth, St. Joe, St.L
(KO&G, T&P, WV*)
#6 - Centralia, K.C., Litchfield, Paducah,Smithboro, Sorento, St.L. (ACL,
CofG, FEC, SAL)
NOTE: several Q points (Billings, K.C. etc) collected cars for 2
geographic areas
*several RR's could have their cars sent to points in more than 1 regional
collection group: Barre & Chelsea 1 & 2; Butte, Anaconda &
Pacific, Mt., Wyo & So., SP&S 2 & 3; CN, CP 1, 2 & 3; OSL, OWR&N 3 & 4; SP 3, 4
& 5; Ft Smith & W, FtW&D, GC&SF, Mid
Term, SD&AE, WV 4 & 5; LH&StL, N&S, N&W, VGN 1 & 6.
Again, Merry Christmas as you sort out your freight car blocks! Gerald
