Ed, the domeless 1947 Empire Builder's equipment became the Western Star when
the Mid-Century Empire Builder was introduced. The 1951 Builder had the
"G-bar-N" Ranch car, the coach diner-lounge, for which the brand was registered
with the Montana Cattlemen's Association. When the Great Domes arrived, the
full-length Pullman observation-lounge was replaced by a room car, and only the
small round end space had seating in the extreme rear of the car. Soon enough
even this car was dropped from the consist.
GN ran a contest among travel agents to name the secondary train on
the route. Evergreen was the most popular name selected by the predominance of
travel agents entering the contest. Yet GN chose Western Star. Nubes
