Rawil,
Have never seen the actual model but can offer a
general viewpoint:
This does seem to be a fairly accurate model of a CB&Q
16xxxx series hopper built in the 60's by Bethlehem
Steel at Johnstown, PA. The noticeable thing about these
cars is that they have low sides and are rather long for
a 100ton hopper.
At the time rail handling of sugar beets on the former
CB&Q portion of the BN ended a few of these cars may have
been in beet service but certainly this was not a CB&Q
practice.
This is probably the largest group of Ex CB&Q lettered cars
still in service on BNSF. Why? BN discovered around 1992
that these cars were excellent for scrap tie service.
Loading wood chip cars required a special machine, and they
only had one of those. With their low sides and a good sized
top chord a "Jimbo" can load scrap ties in these cars just
fine.
BN tried these cars in Taconite service but after one broke
it's back at Winona Jct they realized that they were too
long. They switched to the SLSF 86xxx series hoppers which
are still used as such now. In the BN 551xxx series.
Walther's seems to find it necessary to tell their customers
what kind of service they think the cars were used in. They
do not take into account that during the cars service life
the railroad changes.
You want sugar beet cars? In the CB&Q era stick to 55ton
hoppers and the Hart Selective ballast cars. Move up to the
BN and you can add 70ton hoppers but have to start to scatter
the road names to include GN and NP cars.

Subject: [BRHSlist] Accuracy of Walthers CB&Q Sugar Beet Quad Hoppers?
Can anyone provide a quick assessment on how accurate the Walthers HO Quad
hoppers are for CB&Q sugar beet service cars?
A picture of the model at:
http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-49481
does look similar to CB&Q 161319 at:
http://rr-fallenflags.org/cbq/cbq161319ajs.jpg
but I don't have measurements or indications from the photo that the car was
used in sugar beet service.
Also, in what general time frame were these cars used, and would you see
them in large blocks or mixed with other types of sugar beet cars?
I'm sure some of my questions could be answered by the sugar beet issue of
the Burlington Bulletin --- anyone know where I could buy a copy?
Thanks!
