The Q's outfit was the 745th Railway Operating
Battalion. It was activated on 19 May 1943. On 11
January 1944, it arrived at Bombay, India. It operated
108 miles of Bengal and Assam Railway from Lumding to
Mariana, with several branch lines. The Japanese came
within four and a half miles of Mariana. They used
elephants for switch engines! Hey modelers, there is a
prototype for everything! The Battalion arrived back
in New York City on 28 October 1945. They traveled
around the world because they left from the west coast
and came back via the Suez Canal!
BTW, a Q fireman off the LaCross Division, Lt. Don
Weiss flew a B-17 named "The Twin Zephyr", in combat
over Europe.
