The current always come from the main generator or alternator and, on
most EMD locomotives, the engine speed comes up, usually to run 3 to
provide cooling air for the traction motors which are operating as
generators during DB. The traction motor cooling fans are mechanically
driven on some locomotives and AC motor driven on others using power
from the D14 alternator.
